But once you’re in the countryside, the roads are good and often uncrowded. Amsterdam’s busy harbor is called the Ij (pronounced like “eye”). Across the water from the historic center is the Noord district, a former factory and shipbuilding area that’s gradually transitioned over the past few decades into a cutting-edge, post-industrial wonderland.

Then visit the Anne Frank House, followed by a walk to the centre of the city to Spui and Dam Squares. Head to the Museum Quarter and the art galleries in the Jordaan area, and pick and choose what you would like to visit. The king’s three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel.

Over time, due to changes in water levels and general ageing, some of these poles began to rot, leading to some of the houses tilting sideways. When the metro line was built, houses on a particular street in Amsterdam began to sink due to its construction. Well, the answer is tied to the narrow nature of these houses.

Canal House is still rich with these features – some of which were actively used during the restoration. It’s hard to say whether 4850 is more of a restaurant, a wine bar or a coffee house. In the daytime, it does an excellent line in flat whites and pillowy cinnamon buns. But in the evening, it transforms into a casual-yet-quality eatery that’s known for its extensive wine selection as much as its Nordic-inspired menu. Owner Daniel Schein’s wine list focuses on France – in particular Burgundy, Jura, Champagne and the Loire Valley – but with around 700 bottles on offer it’s fair to say the rest of the world is also well represented.

A little bit more light at the way to our room (#21) would make the atmosphere even more freindly. Located in the heart of the Jordaan, the cultural centre of Amsterdam, Canal House is situated on the Keizersgracht (the King's Canal) and is comprised of three seventeenth century merchants' houses. “Car sharing” agencies like Greenwheels and Free2Move make it easy to rent by downloading their app onto your smartphone, creating an account, and locating a vehicle near your location on an interactive map of Amsterdam.
The à la carte food menu is short but well-curated, using local ingredients with a nod to Schein’s Nordic heritage. For such a small boutique property, the hotel has a nice set of extra property features. There's a swanky bar and lounge, which serves drinks and light fare, and room service is available into the evening. The visit to Het Grachtenhuis, which takes less than an hour, gives you another point of view on the Amsterdam history.
